The one truism about any diet that you begin for weight loss is that you must burn more calories than you consume. That seems pretty simple, right? Well, because of the hundreds of fad diets out there, that basic truth has been lost amidst a flood of bad advice, needless restrictions and plain old mythology. With that in mind, here are some of the worst diets that were presented as serious ways to lose weight and maintain good health.

Lunar Diet


The Lunar Diet was big for a few months. This is a diet in which you are required to fast based on the lunar calendar. First of all, who the heck knows anything about the lunar calendar? Second, having to track this calendar seems like a lot of work. The basic idea is that when you fast, you are only allowed water or juice, and if you stick to it, you are supposedly going to lose multiple pounds in one day. You are then to follow a meal plan based on the moon phases. Anyone really have the time, inclination or foolishness to stick to this diet? And just for argument’s sake, what happens during a lunar eclipse?
