diet you were participating in, carbohydrates, also known as carbs, might have been labeled as bad or
good. These conflicting approaches can be confusing to even a nutrition-savvy individual. The truth is
that there are good carbs and bad carbs. It’s important that you know which carbs to get and which to
avoid if you really want to incorporate a healthy diet.
What Are Carbohydrates?
Carbs are one of the four major biomolecules. They serve important roles in your body, including
transportation of energy. They are known as carbohydrates because they consist of carbon, oxygen, and
hydrogen. Carbs can also be referred to as saccharides. You may have heard of monosaccharides,
disaccharides, and polysaccharides. These are all different types of carbs found in the foods you eat.
Carbohydrates are also an essential part of cellular structure in plants. It is safe to say that your body
would not function the way it does without essential carbohydrates.
Why, then, have different diets and studies come out saying carbs are bad or carbs are good? Are you
supposed to cut them out entirely, avoid them, or try to incorporate them? It depends. There are
different types of carbs that exist. Some of them are very healthy for you; others are not quite so
nutritious. You could say that the information that you read about avoiding carbs and incorporating
