Movie stars often have to lose or gain weight for roles, but some just want to lose weight to promote a healthy lifestyle. Here’s a list of some notable celebs, who have shed pounds in order to improve their life and reduce the risk of weight-based illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.


Jennifer Hudson


Oscar-winner, Hudson, had battled with weight for much of her adult life, and has said in interviews that she didn’t like the way she looked when performing on “American Idol.” After winning her Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, Hudson decided it was time to slim down. In summer 2009, she hired Harley Pasternak, a noted celebrity trainer, to help her lose weight. In addition to working out, Hudson joined Weight Watchers and  became one of their celebrity spokespeople after going from a size 16 to a size 6


Drew Carey


Carey, 56, is a funny man who always seemed to get laughs in part because of his girth. But after his diabetes worsened, Carey went on a high protein, low fat diet, and dropped 80 pounds, crediting a steady intake of fruits, vegetables and six days of cardio per week with not just losing the weight, but helping him keep it off.
